Trust Jesus Christ to Understand and Deliver You
Jesus Christ comprehends our suffering because He descends below all things and experiences every kind of pain, affliction, and temptation. His perfect understanding, mercy, and infinite power make Him the Great Deliverer. His promised deliverance invites faith in how and when He acts.
Jesus Christ is the Great Deliverer!
With perfect understanding and infinite power, He can deliver the righteous from all things, forever.
His deliverance is certain; the question for most righteous followers is not if He will deliver but how and when He will do so.Key Points:
- The Savior understands both visible suffering and burdens no one else sees.
- His Atonement gives Him perfect knowledge of how to succor us.
- Trust in His power does not require knowing the timing or form of deliverance.
- Deliverance includes help during mortality and blessings that extend into eternity.
- What experience helps you recognize that Jesus Christ understands a burden others cannot see?
- When do you receive help from the Savior in a form different from what you expect?
- What experience strengthens your trust in Christ even when you do not know how a difficulty resolves?
Turn Toward Christ Amid Questions and Pain
Opposition reaches everyone, including righteous disciples. Heartrending questions and strong emotions do not automatically signify sin or weakness. They can become a sacred opportunity to exercise agency and turn toward Jesus Christ.
Opposition comes to all, even the righteous.
O God, where art thou?
Such questions and emotions are not sin or weakness; they can create a sacred space where agency is activated and we choose whether to turn toward Jesus Christ.Key Points:
- Faithful service does not exempt disciples from adversity.
- Grief, fear, and sincere questions can coexist with faith.
- Difficult moments invite a choice about where to turn for help.
- The freeway accident illustrates that trials can arise even while a family serves the Lord.
- What difficulty leads you to ask an honest question in prayer?
- When does choosing to turn toward Christ change your response to fear or grief?
- What experience helps you stop treating painful emotions as evidence of spiritual failure?
- How does someone respond compassionately to your questions without minimizing your pain?
Seek Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ Sincerely
Sincere spiritual seeking means turning toward Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ through heartfelt prayer, purposeful fasting, and scripture study. The examples of Alma’s people and King Darius show how people seek divine help amid uncertainty. These acts of faith draw us closer to the Savior.
Sincere seeking means turning toward Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ through heartfelt prayer, purposeful fasting, and scripture study.
Alma’s people in bondage “began to cry mightily to God.”
Such acts of faith draw us closer to Jesus Christ.Key Points:
- Heartfelt prayer expresses dependence on God during affliction.
- Purposeful fasting helps us seek divine assistance.
- Scripture study is part of turning toward the Savior.
- Spiritual seeking strengthens our relationship with Christ rather than functioning as a demand for immediate rescue.
- When does heartfelt prayer help you feel closer to God during uncertainty?
- What experience with purposeful fasting deepens your faith or changes your perspective?
- Which scripture helps you seek Christ during a difficult season?
- What simple spiritual practice helps you keep turning toward the Savior when answers seem slow?
Hold to Covenants and Receive Sacred Assurances
As disciples humbly and patiently keep their covenants, the Savior visits them in their afflictions with assurances of deliverance. These assurances can bring peace, faith, and hope before circumstances change. Sister Brinkerhoff’s testimony illustrates how deep grief and sacred assurance can exist together.
As we humbly and patiently keep our covenants, the Savior will visit us in our afflictions and bring assurances of deliverance.
We were not immediately delivered from the trial, but that assurance gave us hope in the deliverance that would come.
The past few weeks have been the most awful and the most sacred time in my life. I have never clung so tightly to my covenants. I know that Jesus knows what this feels like, and He will heal me.Key Points:
- Assurance can precede outward deliverance.
- Peace and hope do not require the immediate removal of grief.
- Covenant keeping helps disciples remain connected to Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ.
- The Spirit’s reassurance and the help of others both feature in Elder Hathaway’s account of the accident.
- When do you feel peace or hope while a difficult situation remains unresolved?
- How does remembering a covenant help you stay close to the Savior?
- What experience shows you that grief and spiritual reassurance can coexist?
- When does another person’s help become a reminder that God remembers you?
Receive Christ’s Grace to Endure and Grow
The grace of Jesus Christ provides enabling power to endure what we cannot bear alone. It does not necessarily remove pain, but it supplies strength beyond our own. Disciples act faithfully within their abilities and trust God for the help only He can give.
Enabled enduring comes through the grace of Jesus Christ and strengthens us to “cheerfully do all things that lie in our power” and then “stand still, with the utmost assurance, to see the salvation of God, and for his arm to be revealed.”
This grace does not remove the pain and difficulty of affliction; it is an enabling power that allows us, after all we can do, to receive divine strength beyond our own and lay hold on eternal promises through Jesus Christ.
That same enabling grace is available to all who turn to Jesus Christ.Key Points:
- Grace supplies divine strength rather than merely requiring greater personal effort.
- Prayer, obedience, and covenant keeping connect disciples with Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ.
- Faithful endurance includes doing what lies within our power and trusting God with what does not.
- Continuing pain does not mean Christ’s enabling grace is absent.
- When do you receive strength to do something you cannot manage alone?
- What experience helps you distinguish relying on Christ from relying only on willpower?
- How do prayer or covenant keeping help you continue through an ongoing burden?
- When does accepting your limits help you trust the Lord more fully?
Trust the Savior’s Time and Way of Deliverance
The Savior delivers in His own time and way and consecrates afflictions for our gain. Waiting can bring spiritual growth without indicating that He forgets us or delights in our suffering. His power extends beyond mortal timelines, and some deliverance awaits the Resurrection.
He has not forgotten you. He does not take joy in your suffering.
However, He knows that lessons learned while waiting can bring converting growth that an earlier rescue might not produce.
Be not afraid, only believe.
Some miracles are immediate, some come after long waiting, and some await the Resurrection.
I will seek that which was lost, and bring again that which was driven away, and will bind up that which was broken, and will strengthen that which was sick.Key Points:
- Waiting upon the Lord can produce growth and spiritual stretching.
- Delayed deliverance does not mean the Savior is distracted or forgetful.
- Jairus’s experience demonstrates that apparently final circumstances do not exceed Christ’s power.
- Not every faithful person receives immediate relief or a reversal of loss in mortality.
- The Resurrection extends the promise of deliverance beyond this life.
- The Savior’s reassuring voice invites disciples to hear, believe, and act.
- What period of waiting helps you grow in faith or understanding?
- When does the Lord answer a prayer in a different time or way than you anticipate?
- How does faith in the Resurrection bring hope amid loss or an unresolved trial?
- What helps you remember that the Savior does not forget you when relief seems distant?
- When does the invitation “Be not afraid, only believe” help you take a faithful next step?
