Spiritual Immunity
Ideas for Opening the Lesson
- Write “spiritual immunity” on the board and invite class members to explain what the phrase suggests. Read Elder Chigbundu’s statement that building spiritual immunity gives us strength and courage to withstand life’s challenges. Clarify that spiritual strength does not mean freedom from trials, and introduce the four small and simple practices he emphasizes.
- Read Alma 37:6 and invite class members to name small, consistent actions that produce meaningful results in everyday life. Connect their answers to scripture study, prayer, the sacrament, and covenants. Ask the class to consider why seemingly simple spiritual practices deserve deliberate attention.
- Invite class members to silently consider Elder Chigbundu’s question: “What keeps you awake at night or weighs on your mind?” Allow a brief moment for reflection without asking anyone to disclose private concerns. Explain that the discussion explores ways to draw strength from Jesus Christ while facing those concerns.
- Read the words of the sister who faces cancer: “As I pray daily, I realize that the Savior loves me. I see His hands all around me, telling me, ‘My daughter, all is well.’” Ask what her words teach about receiving spiritual strength even when a difficult circumstance continues. Use the discussion to introduce the distinction between having a burden removed and receiving strength to carry it.
- Display four words: “Scriptures,” “Prayer,” “Sacrament,” and “Covenants.” Invite class members to choose one silently and consider how it connects them with the Savior. Explain that the lesson offers an opportunity to discover renewed meaning in familiar practices rather than simply add items to a checklist.
Topics
Build Spiritual Immunity Through Small and Simple Things
Elder Chigbundu teaches that spiritual immunity provides strength and courage amid wars, family challenges, economic uncertainty, and other difficulties. The Lord offers guidance through small and simple practices that help us navigate these challenges. Spiritual immunity does not eliminate trials; it helps us face them with faith rather than fear.
As we build our spiritual immunity, we develop the strength and courage to withstand the challenges of life.

- How does Elder Chigbundu’s message distinguish spiritual protection from a life without hardship?
- How does the teaching that the Lord refines and strengthens us influence the way we view proving moments?
- What experiences in your life illustrate the power of small and simple spiritual practices?

- Which small and simple practice needs more attention in your life, and what manageable change can you make this week?
Search the Scriptures to Know the Lord
Scripture study provides knowledge, but its greater purpose is to help us come to know the Lord. Applying His words shapes our thoughts and responses to challenges, invites the guidance of the Holy Ghost, and strengthens faith. The missionary’s experience illustrates how daily study can deepen testimony and clarify purpose.
When we study the scriptures, we get knowledge, but more important, we come to know the Lord. As we apply what we learn, His words begin to shape how we think and how we respond to life challenges.
- What is the difference between gaining information from the scriptures and coming to know the Lord through them?

Draw Near to Heavenly Father Through Prayer
Prayer draws us closer to Heavenly Father as we seek His help, guidance, and blessings. Elder Chigbundu teaches that prayer in faith strengthens spiritual immunity and helps us recognize the Savior’s love. Even when a burden remains, the Lord can strengthen us to carry it.
As we pray in faith, our spiritual immunity will be strengthened. The burden we carry may not always be removed, but our backs will be built to carry the load placed upon them (see Mosiah 24:14–15).
- What does the Savior’s invitation to “Draw near unto me” teach us about the purpose of prayer?
- What stands out to you about the testimony of the sister who faces cancer?

- What can you change in your prayers to seek a closer relationship with Heavenly Father?
Remember Jesus Christ Through the Sacrament
The sacrament is a sacred ordinance that strengthens our relationship with the Savior. Its promises direct us to take His name upon us, always remember Him, and keep His commandments. As we remember Him throughout the week, He gradually refines our lives and helps us focus on learning and changing.
As we partake of the sacrament, we can ask ourselves, “What would He have me do?” As we remember Jesus Christ throughout the week and strive to keep His commandments, our lives are gradually refined and reshaped.

Honor Covenants and Worship in the Temple
Covenants create a bond between us and God, and honoring them brings the blessings He promises. Elder Chigbundu identifies temple worship as vital to staying on the covenant path. Remembering covenants and worshipping in the temple help us receive personal direction even as trials continue.
Remember that trials may come, yet as we worship in the temple and remember our covenants, we receive personal direction from the Lord that will guide us along the covenant path.
